Kyoto Before the Crowds: Mornings That Made the Trip

How early starts unlocked a quieter Kyoto — empty temple paths, breakfast sets, and the case for slowing right down.

The secret to Kyoto isn't a hidden temple. It's a 6am alarm. The same paths that swarm by ten o'clock belong almost entirely to you at dawn.

Start with Fushimi Inari

Arrive before seven and the famous tunnel of gates is silent. Climb past the first viewpoint where most people turn back, and you'll often have the mountain to yourself.

Then, breakfast

Reward the early start with a traditional breakfast set — grilled fish, rice, miso, pickles. It's the meal we still talk about.
